Huitzilopochtli


I always found it interesting that the primary deity of the mighty Aztecs was a hummingbird. Certainly beautiful, but perhaps not the fear-inspiring god you might expect to have had thousands upon thousands of human sacrifices made to. I guess big surprises sometimes come in small packages.

  1. aaron, think about it ... the little hummingbird flies thousands of miles (kilometres) every year from their summer homes in places like Canada, to their winter homes in Mexico and farther south ...

    they are beautiful ... they are amazing to watch - they hover, zip, float and when you hold one in your hand they have almost no weight - but a wonderful beating heart ...

    They are also amazingly aggressive around their food source, and there is little they are afraid of. I've seen a swarm of hummingbirds chase off bigger, stronger birds ...

    What a grand choice for a god image ... Christians would do as well ...
