Union Now?

Tomorrow my office, the General Council Office of The United Church of Canada, will vote whether or not to join the CUPE union....and I have no idea how I will vote.

In theory, I'm pro-union. Autoworkers, teachers, city workers like Wendy should all be part of a union. But I'm often conflicted about whether or not it's the right choice for a church. Even a national church office.

Your advice would be appreciated.

  1. Wish I could help. I of course come from a union background and my father, etc. In the 60s we used to take over bars, push back the tables and dance the hora interspersed with union songs, "You got to roll..you got to roll..the union on, etc". But with church I have much less experience..good luck.

  2. I'd say - vote YES!!

Mother church has never been a kind, caring nor compassionate place - take the plunge and vote to join ... then maybe the Institution will begin to take seriously the problems we have the ground beyond the 416/905 area codes !!!

and I'll even sign my name !!!

  3. Vote Yes, it will help speed the demise of the United Church of Canada. Once a union comes in it will increase the already adversarial spirit in your apostate denomination. The UCC worships liberal individualism and self fulfillment. It has abandoned the cross a long time ago ... and with the loss of the cross goes Apage community.

  4. Thanks for sharing. (You too James Love!)

The vote count as of today is:

    -61 yes

    -70 no

-17 contested ballots which are unopened. I guess they are negoiating what to do with these ballots, so we have to see what happens.

  5. Why don't they just open them?

  6. I think it's because there's some kind of debate about whether these people are eligible to vote or not.
