P-LAND BLAZES (Part 1)

Here is Part 1 of the P*Land Blazes video (actually, it's originally a film). The P*Land crew is shredding the Ramp, Phelan, Calif. (circa 1979). The Ramp was the heart of our lives back in those years. For you don't know, the Ramp was located in the Elfering's yard in downtown Phelan, just behind where Circle K is now. It was outfitted with big-o cabinet speakers and lights and we spend many days and nights out there skating, jamming, and hanging out with groupies in the "P*Hut." Because it was "downtown," there was quite a social scene there, especially on summer nights. It was totally rad.

For details on this video see the comments section.

The second part of this movie is of us skating the pool at Mountain High Lodge, featuring honorary P*Lander Diane Engels. I'll try to post it soon.

  2. ...by the way, I should add that the music was added when I had the original film transferred to video in the late 80s by an overly ambitious, and likely somewhat bored, Santa Cruz technician.

Note the lack of safety gear. Thelma's well is somewhere there in the background. Nick Phipps went on to become bi-polar and lives on the streets somewhere in the LA area...To this day I tell people my sons were the "first boys of skate" in the Mojave Desert. Hope Sol sees this!

HEY, HOW TOTALLY RAD IS THIS FILM? I had no idea there was footage of you guys or the ramp. I, like your mom tell the kids around here how my friends blazed the skating trail here back in the day. I have SO many great memories and just a couple not so great memories from that hangout, it is SO unbelievably cool to see it again! I remember getting hurt on that ramp quite a few times. I remember I had a little better luck skating it with my "oh so cool" high-top green suede skates! Remember those puppies?lol Hey, my brother still has your deck with all of the drawing you did on the bottom- pretty sure it was a Tony Hawk...remember? I tried to get him to give it to me and he would have NONE of that, being as you gave it to him. It was also very cool to see these other guys since I haven't seen any of them in AGES except for Robb Perry. Thank you SO much for posting the little piece of history.

p.s.-sorry, obviously your deck would have been an Alva, not a Hawk...just to correct the error if you couldn't edit it.peace, Sharon

  7. Hi Sharon, thanks for your note(s). Yes I am very glad we have this film...I have a million stories about the Ramp and the P*Hut, but I can't share them here because my Mom reads this site :-)

    (...right Mom?)

Please try to get a picture of that Alva Skate that I painted. I would LOVE to see it again.

    Peace to you!
    A

I agree with your mom, please do tell your stories! She cant ground you anymore-lol. All I can say to your mom is: we all did some pretty wild stuff and are pretty lucky that we survived it all intact. Hopefully the trouble she imagined you guys got into was worse than reality:)I have an interesting story about the hangout at George's- Aaron, I don't know if you will remember this or not, but on Phelan Days(I think it was the same year your film was made)also the same Phelan Days that Ronnie tried to push me off of the bridge of the aqueduct...There were some Fontana boys visiting with a girl that was briefly dating George and there was almost a fight between you guys and them. Anyway, the girl with George was introduced to me as Alice and I never saw her or them again after that. At least until MANY years later I met her as Ali- a girl who ended up marrying my brother. They are still married today. We didn't discover that we had met there until about 15 years later...what a trip, huh? peace, Sharon

Hey Chris, sounds like YOU are quite the writer too- I cant wait to read your novel. There IS more to that story that makes it more like lifetime channel fare...add in the dangers of drinking WAY too much alcohol and being alone with someone you just met...I think that is also the same night I saw the younger Gallegos son making out with my best friend in a car @ George's house. Come on Aaron, your turn to share! Sharon

Hey Chris and Aaron and Sol, being as my memory is not what it used to be, I would like to post a correction here about the younger Gallegos brother making out with my best friend in a car @ the Elfering house. It just occured to me the other day that the fogged up windows were caused by the younger ELFERING brother...you know who you are! Sol was probably making out with some other girl in some other car- sorry Sol, my bad! Peace and Love, Sharon

Hey take it easy about fogging up the windows, that was a great time. I don't evan remember her name. And that girl who stabbed Aarons car (Ali) we nammed her DOLLY DAGGER from fontana. She put a knife wound in the corola.Boy those were the daze. The Corola was handed down to sol, me, Sol and Devin drove it up to Santa Cruz the car took a crap up there and we had to ride a grey hound bus back to Victorville. It took us like 14 hours on the bus.

I was asked to clarify the knife in the corolla story by my sister in law Ali. She says that it was NOT her that put the knife in the car, but her friend Kim who was dating Scott Steven's brother I think. peace out, Sharon

    ReplyDelete
  20. ...so you're saying that Scott Stevens is an accessory to the crime?

    ReplyDelete
  21. No, I don't think Scott was an accessory but he IS 5 degrees from Kevin Bacon...check this out. Scott has a brother who is the boyfriend of "Dolly Dagger" who was the best friend of my sister-in-law Ali who used to hang out in this little Mexican restaurant in Fontana at the same time Sammy Hagar hung out there who played a concert with Kevin Bacon (the Bacon Brothers Band)...trip, huh?
