My readers outside of Canada may not be aware that this is Victoria Day weekend here. It's an amazing holiday where Canadians across the country dress up in Victorian-era costumes and gather with family and loved ones to attend huge Victorian balls and teas. Almost every small town holds public readings of the Victorian writers, especially those with Canadian connections in their work. Sporting types often participate in polo matches, horse racing, lawn bowling, or even baseball games using Victorian-era rules and equipment. Bigger cities often have large Victorian fairs, complete with India pavilions and displays from the other Common Wealth countries.
The climax of Victoria Day is a thrilling firework display to celebrate the birthday of Queen Victoria!
So, we're out frolicking. Be back soon!

ReplyDeleteI grew up in this country, and you just described NO Victoria day I've ever been a part of ...
May 2/4 Weekend is the weekend when you break out the big box of beer, and head for the campground, the cottage, or the backyard ... Then on Monday night you top it off with fireworks.
Costumes?? Readings?? Polo Matches??? Pavilions??? Where have you been hanging out Aaron???
That is not the Victoria Day I've EVER known ...
Dude, you are really missing all the fun!
ReplyDeleteDude Shaun,
ReplyDeleteYou are missing the point-it is supposed to be funny!
A joke! To fool the US Friends etc!!!
Wendy
It was a JOKE? And here I was imagining the two of you frolicking in Victorian garb, spewing poems while dodging the polo,(is that like a hockey puck?)under the purple explosions of your pyrotechnic fellow Canadians. You see, you don't have to get up very early to fool the Americans!
